FOB vs DDP Shipping for Packaging: What Importers Should Know
FOB and DDP are the two Incoterms you will meet most often when buying custom packaging from China. In short: FOB (Free On Board) means the supplier's responsibility ends when your goods are loaded on the ship at the origin port; DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) means the supplier delivers the goods to your door, with freight, insurance, duties and taxes included in one price. Under FOB the buyer controls the freight - useful if you have a forwarder contract or consolidated shipments. Under DDP you get one price and fewer surprises, but that price includes logistics and customs handling you do not see itemized.
Why DDP is popular for packaging orders
Packaging is freight-heavy relative to its value: a box is mostly air. For a 100-1,000 pcs pilot order, the difference between a rushed FOB arrangement and a handled DDP shipment can decide whether the project feels easy or painful. Buyers choose DDP because it turns "packaging from China" into something close to a local purchase - especially on first orders, when you have not yet built a freight relationship.

- United States: Section 301 tariffs have applied to many Chinese-made goods, including paper and printed packaging in several tranches.
