The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is now active. Use this checklist to ensure your custom boxes from China meet the new European standards.

PPWR compliance checklist

As of August 2026, the European packaging landscape has changed permanently. For brand managers importing from China, compliance is no longer optional—it's a prerequisite for market entry. Here is our engineering team's checklist for a smooth transition.

1. Recyclability Verification (Section 6)

  • [ ] Ensure at least 95% of the box weight is a single material (e.g., paper/cardboard).
  • [ ] Replace plastic laminations with water-based varnishes or eco-coatings.
  • [ ] Use removable glue or mechanical interlocking designs.

2. EPR Registration Status

  • [ ] Confirm LUCID registration for Germany.
  • [ ] Confirm ADEME registration for France.
  • [ ] Obtain your national EPR registration numbers to provide to customs.

3. Mandatory Labeling & Triman Logo

  • [ ] French market: Ensure the Triman logo + sorting instructions are printed.
  • [ ] Italian market: Ensure the environmental coding (e.g., PAP 21) is visible.
  • [ ] General EU: QR codes linking to material composition data are highly recommended.

4. Minimizing "Empty Space"

  • [ ] Limit empty volume to no more than 40% of the total box size.
  • [ ] Request a tight-fit dieline from our engineers to avoid penalties.
