FSC Certification Explained: What It Means for Your Packaging

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification is a third-party scheme that verifies forest products come from responsibly managed forests; for packaging, the certificate that matters is the Chain of Custody (CoC), which tracks certified material from the forest to the finished box. If your supplier holds an FSC CoC certificate, they can print the FSC label on your packaging and issue an invoice that ties your order to certified material. EliteBox Packaging holds FSC Chain of Custody license C153690.
Two certificates, one chain
FSC is built on two different certificates. Forest Management (FM) certifies the forest itself - how it is harvested, replanted and protected. Chain of Custody (CoC) certifies every company that handles the material afterwards: pulp mill, paper mill, printer, converter and packaging factory. A factory cannot legally print the FSC label without a valid CoC certificate.
There are three label types you will see on packaging: FSC 100% (all fibre from FSC-certified forests), FSC Mix (a mix of FSC-certified, recycled and controlled fibre), and FSC Recycled (all fibre reclaimed). Most rigid boxes use FSC Mix board with FSC-certified wrap paper, which is why the label usually reads FSC Mix.
How to verify a certificate in two minutes
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Ask your supplier for their FSC code (ours is FSC C153690) and a copy of the certificate |
| 2 | Search that code in the FSC public certificate database online |
| 3 | Check the status, the scope of products covered, and the expiry date |
| 4 | Confirm the code printed on your invoice and packaging matches the certificate holder |
That is the whole test. A certificate number is only useful if it is current and if the certified scope actually covers the product you are buying - a printer with a CoC for brochures is not automatically certified for rigid box board.
Why it matters for brands and export
- Retailer and marketplace requirements: many EU and US retailers now ask for the FSC code before listing paper-based packaging.
- Regulation pressure: EU rules on deforestation-free products and packaging waste push brands to prove the origin of paper fibre, not just claim it.
- ESG and brand commitments: an FSC code is auditable evidence for a sustainability report; "eco-friendly" on its own is not.
- Consumer trust: the FSC label is one of the most recognised forest marks worldwide, and it is verifiable by anyone with a browser.
What FSC does and does not cover
FSC covers the origin of wood and paper fibre. It does not cover ink chemistry - that is REACH and RoHS - and it does not guarantee that a finished box is recyclable or that it performs in a drop test. Quality management sits with ISO 9001:2015 (we hold 00122Q310344R0M/4400), and food-contact-adjacent work needs material declarations on top. The full sustainability story is usually FSC plus recycled content plus water-based inks plus recyclable or plastic-free consumables.
How to add FSC to your order
- Specify FSC Mix or FSC Recycled greyboard, and FSC-certified wrap paper
- Tell us if the FSC label goes on the pack, in the print, or only on the invoice - on-pack claims need correct label artwork and your code or ours
- Ask for the FSC claim to appear on your commercial invoice so the chain is documented
- Keep the certificate PDF with your supplier records for retailers and auditors
Anyone can claim "eco-friendly". An FSC code in the footer of an invoice is checkable in a public database in under two minutes - ours is C153690.
FAQ
Q: What is FSC certified packaging?
A: Packaging made with wood or paper fibre from responsibly managed forests and recycled sources, produced by a factory that holds a valid FSC Chain of Custody certificate and can therefore print the FSC label.
Q: How do I check if a supplier is really FSC certified?
A: Ask for their FSC code, then search it in the FSC public certificate database and confirm the status, scope and expiry date. Ours is FSC C153690.
Q: Does FSC cost more?
A: Certified board carries a small premium, but at EliteBox FSC-certified paper and recycled greyboard are standard material choices, not a surcharge line item.
Q: Is FSC packaging recyclable?
A: FSC certifies fibre origin, not recyclability. Paper-based mono-material packaging with water-based inks and no plastic lamination is the most recyclable, and we can quote that configuration.
